Will Snapchat delete my Memories?

No. According to Snapchat Support, archived Memories stay stored on Snapchat. To open them, you need a paid storage plan, or to download them first.

How much is Snapchat's storage plan?

Snapchat Support gives US prices: $1.99 a month or $20 a year for 100 GB of Memories storage.

Is my file sent anywhere?

No. The page reads it in your browser. No date, count or place from your file goes over the network.

Snapchat says “starting in January 2027” with no exact day. The page counts on January 1, which gives the lowest possible number. Later on, more Memories will be over a year old.

Which Snapchat Memories get archived in January 2027?

Snapchat archives Memories more than a year old that aren't part of your oldest 5 GB. Drop the memories_history.json file from your export. The page counts your Memories year by year and tells you how many will be over a year old on January 1, 2027. Your browser reads the file and sends it to no one.

Drop memories_history.json

It's in the json folder of your export's first ZIP. You can also drop that ZIP, and the page reads only this file from it.

Snapchat's rule

From Snapchat Support's article on Memories storage:

“Starting in January 2027, Memories that are more than one year old and are not part of your oldest 5GB of Memories will be archived and remain stored on Snapchat.”

Archived Memories stay on Snapchat, as thumbnails in the app. To open, edit or share one, you need a paid storage plan, or to download it first. The archiving guide quotes the rest of the page.

What the page calculates

How many Memories Snapchat lists, photos and videos.
That number year by year, from each line's date, in universal time (UTC).
How many will be over a year old on January 1, 2027. Snapchat gives no exact day in January, so the page uses the 1st. Each month that passes adds another month of Memories.

It doesn't say which ones will be archived one by one, because that needs each file's size and the JSON doesn't give it. It also doesn't know exactly what Snapchat counts toward the 5 GB.

Where to find memories_history.json

In Snapchat's “My Data” export, the file is in the json folder of the first ZIP. On a computer, open that ZIP and drop the file here, or drop the whole ZIP. The page then reads its table of contents and takes only this file. No export yet? The export guide shows how to request one.
